It's not a specific option, John, but we've discussed the issue before on
fundsvcs.

The gist of those discussion was that, as you point out, membership payments
cannot be counted in fund raising totals (which many of us find ridiculous
since the IRS recognizes them as gifts!).

And knowing that many of our Alumni make these payments as their annual
support of our institution and certainly do treat them as tax deductible
contributions even if we do not.

And, therefore, given the above many of us, Duke University included, do
include folk who pay membership fees in our alumni participation rates.

But with all that said, our including those folk only increases our
Undergraduate Alumni participation rate by about 1%.

BTW, this is one of the issues that will, hopefully, be addressed in the
next iteration of the CASE Management Reporting Standards.

John

Subject: [FUNDSVCS] Alumni Participation

I know I should know this but can't find but one reference in the "black
book".

I thought it was an institution's option whether to count alumni membership
as participation? I know it can't count in fundraising totals but thought
it could count as participants.

Can someone elaborate or point me to the correct ruling?

Thanks. JOHN
