Yes, John. It does depend on the benefits. See IRS Publication 526.
When tallying up how many alumni "participated" I simply add these few in to
the mix. We track alumni dues payments in our system and simply exclude the
dollar amount from our CAE totals, but not the alumni count.

So, how do you count them in participation? Do you just incorporate those
additional folks who have not "given" in your totals or do you actually
record a transaction in your giving (a token $1, for instance)?
