A couple of thoughts, Travis.

First, I do not envision a dramatic change from the way we currently do
business. What I expect to see this year are clarifications on cloudy
issues (software gifts-in-kind), addressing issues not addressed before
(intellectual property), and expansion of definitions, especially in the
area of Planned Giving. I would suspect that any MAJOR changes contemplated
would be mentioned now, but not implemented until the next version goes out
five years hence. For example, I have been suggesting during my
presentations across the country that CASE might, one day, eliminate the
recording/reporting of fair market values for deferred gifts. They have no
relevance for comparison purposes - only the present value does. Well, if
you read Vance Peterson's comments in this months Currents you will see the
seeds of this line of thinking. And I support it! But I don't think such a
drastic change would go into affect without some warning.

Secondly, if and when significant changes are made to the campaign reporting
standards, I would expect CASE to permit schools who began a campaign under
one set of standards to conclude their campaign under those same standards.
They might even have a check box on the campaign report form where you would
specify "1996 Rules" or "2006 Rules."

John - Do you foresee any changes in the current standards that would effect
how colleges currently report results? I ask this primarily because we are
in the quiet phase of our campaign and based our campaign counting standards
on the existing Reporting Standards. If the new standards change even
slightly, it puts us in the awkward position of either not being in
compliance with CASE standards or having to change our own campaign counting
standards mid-way through a campaign. Thanks for any foresight.

I thought I would give you an update on the status of the revision to the
CASE Management Reporting Standards.

As mentioned last October, CASE does intend on issuing new reporting
standards this year, and will endeavor to issue revisions or replacements to
those standards every five years hereafter.

The Philanthropy Commission of CASE will be meeting this month and has, as
one of its key agenda items, the 2001 Management Reporting Standards. The
plan is for this commission to direct the creation of a task force to
formulate the new standards, with the objective being to have
recommendations floated in time for discussion at the CASE Annual Assembly
and the various Summer Institutes.

I appreciate the input many of you gave me several months ago, and urge all
of you to continue to pass along ideas or issues to be addressed in the new
standards as you think of them.
